Why use hyaluronic acid in oral care?
High molecular weight hyaluronic acid is a natural physiological component of connective tissue. It plays a important role in the collagen-making process. It is active in tissue regeneration and influences the migration of fibroblasts and fibrinogenesis, thus important in tissue healing. Hyaluronic acid is anti-inflammatory, accelerates the healing process and provides a protective barrier. Contributing to the barrier function and tensile strength of the periodontal ligament, Hyaluronic acid is essential for healthy gingival tissues. In the initial stage of inflammation and periodontal disease, tissue’s requirement for hyaluronic acid increases by 200%, signifying its crucial role in regulating cell turnover and optimizing tissue regeneration. When hyaluronic acid is lacking, healing will be delayed and inflammation will continue.
Why use Xylitol in oral care?
Xylitol reduces the levels of mutans streptococci (MS) in plaque and saliva by disrupting their energy production processes, leading to futile energy cycle and cell death. It reduces the adhesion of these microorganisms to the teeth surface and also reduces their acid production potential. Xylitol, like any other sweetener, promotes mineralization by increasing the salivary flow when used as chewing gum or large xylitol pastille. The uniqueness of xylitol is that it is practically nonfermentable by oral bacteria. Also, there is a decrease in levels of MS, as well as the amount of plaque, when there is habitual consumption of xylitol.
